2010 SAM State Map Project

Map Files and Current Status

Goals of the new state map:

  • Maps that will allow snowmobilers to easily locate S.A.M. sanctioned trails and travel from club to club across the state.
  • Large, foldable map style
  • Water resistant or laminated
  • Clear, easy to read, standardized map similar to other state maps
  • Clear, labeled major roads
  • Outlined state forest regions
  • All corridor trails
  • Some secondary trails (TBD)
  • All intersections labeled on map with new standard (club acronym + number). i.e. NF35 for a Northfield intersection.

You can find updated map status at http://www.sledmass.com/map.asp.

Some clubs are working very hard to GPS or update their GPS information, provide printed maps, information on trail numbers, intersection numbers, and points of interest.

Thank you.

Unfortunately, there are still 20 clubs that have not provided any GPS trail information. There is approximately 1 month left until the deadline. We will need to receive much more club information to justify a new state map.

Please read the current status of each club and assist where you can.

January 6, 2010

In the 2008/2009 season SAM Delegates voted to gather information and produce a new (improved) state map. A prototype map was assembled and printed but the project was stalled as we did not receive enough data from clubs to justify the cost of a new map.

In the fall of 2009 delegates voted to continue to have clubs gather data and an absolute deadline of the March 2010 SAM Meeting was set. Clubs not completing the requirements for the map would not be eligible for a grooming contract in the 2010/2011 season.

The required information includes:

  1. New or updated GPS trail data.
  2. New or updated intersection locations and labels/numbers based on club acronyms.
  3. New or updated trail numbers.
  4. New or updated locations of parking, trail pass locations, fuel, and points of interest.
  5. Printed version of club map showing trail numbers, intersections, and points of interest to verify data.

Email map@sledmass.com with any information you have.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What format should the trail GPS data be in? Is my GPS file compatible?
A: ANY format should work. We have yet to have a format we couldn't use. Trails produced using GoogleEarth are as acceptable as any format as these themselves are also GPS coordinates in a file. Some formats we've received are [gpx] [kmz] [tp4] [tpx] [loc] [wpt] [txt] [csv] [mps] [rxf] [txf] [gbd]

Q: What is the BEST way to have data?
A: BEST = A single GPS file containing all routes, waypoints showing intersection numbers, waypoints showing fuel and other points of interest, and routes labeled directly or through comments.
GOOD = A GPS file containing all routes and waypoints showing intersections. The printed map must label the trail numbers, intersections, and points of interest.
ACCEPTABLE = A GPS file containing all routes. The printed map must label the trail numbers, intersections, and points of interest.
UNACCEPTABLE = Only a printed map. We MUST have a GPS file.

Q: What if our club doesn't have access to a GPS?
A: Most any GPS will do, but if you can't find one to borrow, SAM has one for loan. You can also use GoogleEarth to 'draw' trails. Some members have experience with GoogleEarth and are willing to assist clubs.

Q: What if we don't want all our trails on the state map?
A: We will only be putting trails on a 'prototype' map for clubs to review, markup, and decide what should be removed or is missing. A map will not go to print without signoff from all club delegates.

Q: Can't we just use the data we submitted in 2006?
A: If your trail data has not changed, yes. However, you still need to provide trail numbers, intersection numbers, and points of interest. You must also let the map committee know that you want to use the data from 2006 (it will not be assumed). Remember, this map is only as good as the data!!
