PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Wanted: A 30-Hour Day!
By Dan Gould
January 2009

The holidays are over and we can all take a breather. I really need one. This is the first season ever that my sleds are not ready to go before December. It’s already January and I haven’t so much as lifted the hood or even looked at them. I’ve simply been too darned busy. Between the demands of my job, a home improvement project, two young boys that are very active, and the business of SAM… 24 hours a day just isn’t cutting it. Getting the sleds ready is now a high priority, as the winter will be over in the blink of an eye. It shouldn’t take too long to tune them, with a bit of luck, an afternoon should do the trick. They got the full rubber glove examination last year, so hopefully I won’t find much wrong and fresh gas, oil and lube will be all that’s needed. My trailer, well, that’s another story... I have been tackling major maintenance - a little at a time - during the past few years. It’s over 10 years old, so I rewired her about two or three years ago, then replaced the tires and a few other things last season. I started repairing the broken rivets that hold the deck to the frame when I spotted a crack in the metal. Procrastination is a sport I don’t normally play, but I’ve yet to get this repaired and we aren’t going very far until it’s done. Time and money, there is never enough!

Time is at a premium for everyone and the new SAM meeting format seems to be working in our favor. As mentioned a few months ago, we are breaking up into small groups and tackling multiple tasks, rather than the whole body directing its efforts in a single direction. It appears that we are getting more done. The Delegates have also decided to change the annual meeting format this year. Instead of holding a daylong meeting on a Saturday or Sunday, it will be held on a weekday evening: Thursday night, April 9th, at the Depot Restaurant in Northampton at 5:30PM. Cost for SAM Members, which includes dinner, is $10.00 each; $20.00 for non-members. Most of the Delegates felt that it was difficult to take a whole Saturday or Sunday for the meeting and wanted to try a meeting during the week. I’m not crazy about this idea, but it doesn’t hurt to give it a try. Maybe I’ll summerize my sleds the following Saturday, the timing will be about right!
