What is SERT?
The Snow Emergency Response Team was formed in January of 2005 when the SAM Board of Directors officially sanctioned the organization. The team has volunteer members from Fire, Police, and EMS agencies across the state who are willing to donate their time to carry out the mission of SERT. SERT will assist any local or state emergency service agency in the event of a winter crisis such as blizzard, ice storm, or heavy snowfall that renders conventional response equipment unable to perform or severely hampers emergency services. SERT will mobilize with a rapid-response team of trained firefighters, police officers, or EMS professionals on snowmobiles to assist with search & rescue, EMS functions, or deliver life-saving medication to snow-bound residents. Every SERT member is a certified First Responder with the experience to handle winter emergencies.

Want to Join SERT?
There are many different ways to assist SERT in the mission. All SERT members are required to be members of the Snowmobile Association of Massachusetts. The three most important types of members are as follows:

  • RESPONDER: This category of volunteer is certified as First Responder and may have additional training in police, fire, rescue, or EMS functions. Responders would be dispatched to assist local or state agencies and may be required to drive up to 100 miles. All responders must have unrestricted access to a trailered snowmobile and 4-wheel drive vehicle.
  • SUPPORT: This category of SERT member is not responsible for emergency calls and would not need First Responder certification. This is a behind-the-scenes member who may be responsible for inventory, secretarial duties, reports, writing assignments, media contact, or manage mailing lists. These tasks are very important for efficient operation and require attention to detail. Snowmobile ownership is not required. A support member may have the opportunity to complete First Responder Training to become a Responder member.
  • SPONSOR: This category is much like a 'silent partner' who is supporting the SERT mission through contributions of funds, equipment, donations, time, or resources. The Sponsor is typically a business that understands the financial burdens of operating a volunteer agency and is committed to helping out with special projects or day-to-day operations. Snowmobile ownership is not required.
