For the sixth year in a row, SAM clubs will be hosting three vintage sanctioned rides, right here in Massachusetts! The Vintage sanctioned rides are for anyone with a sled 1989 or older or even if you have a newer sled you can go on the ride however the newer sleds need the proper registrations. On the vintage sleds you can do this WITHOUT a state registration or SAM trail pass on the sled. The only thing that the rider needs is a current SAM membership. In order to participate, you will have to present the pink copy of your current SAM membership trail pass--the one that came with the trail pass sticker. As an example, if you have a 2001 sled that has a current SAM sticker on it, you will only need the pink copy of that form with you the day of the ride to prove SAM membership. Bring that, and your 1976 (or what ever you have) vintage sled to any of these sanctioned rides and enjoy yourself!!!

Now... if you’re not a SAM member, don’t worry. You will be able to join the day of your first sanctioned ride you attend, however it’s important to get to the sanctioned rides early, during registration (usually 9 – 11AM however check with the hosting clubs). Once you become a member of the hosting club and SAM, you will be eligible to take part in all of the vintage rides remaining this season. Again, this is something fairly new, it allows vintage owners a few days to get the old sleds out of the barns, shined up, and put to use! Remember, these sanctioned rides have strict boundaries and if you go outside these areas you will need a state registration and a SAM sticker displayed on the vintage sled. It will be up to the hosting clubs to make sure that the trails are well marked, so the riders don't travel outside of the boundaries and have any issues with law enforcement. The hosting clubs will provide all riders with a map of the riding area during registration.

The three sanctioned rides for 2010 are as follows:

  • Jan 9th - Coldbrook Snowmobile Club
  • Jan 16th - Worthington Snowmobile Club
  • Feb 7th - Knox Trail Sno-Riders

If you don't have a vintage ride, come out anyways and check out some really nice sleds. Remember, these are the sleds that some SAM members rode 30 years ago, the same members and sleds that helped to make the trails of today.

If any clubs are interested in hosting a vintage event (swap meet, show or just a meet) contact Bob Dodge (Western MA) robert.dodge@sledmass.com or Andy Holland (Central & Eastern MA) vintagesleds@sledmass.com. This committee can help get the word out and lend any advice to assist your function. If you have a great vintage story or an idea for one, please drop us an email.
