Interior’s Wild Lands: The Full Natural Resource Committee met last Tuesday for an oversight hearing on the economic impacts of the Administration’s new “Wild Lands” order.  Established by Secretarial Order, the “Wild Lands” policy appears to allow the Interior Department  establish de facto Wilderness areas without Congressional approval.

The Committee heard from Western governors and local elected officials who expressed their concern over the proposed order and its negative impact on jobs, economic growth and American energy production.

When questioned, Director of the Bureau of Land Management Bob Abbey stated that the Administration may not have statutory authority to elevate “Wild Lands” above other uses.  Republicans soundly rejected the Obama Administration’s Secretarial Order, pointing out that the order attempts to designate Wilderness areas without Congressional approval and without proper input from the public.

Interior Budget Dramatically Increases Funding for  Land Acquisition  At the Full Committee budget hearing on Thursday, Members questioned why Administration is spending hundreds of millions of additional dollars for the government to purchase more federal land.  Chairman Hastings noted: “The Department of the Interior has a maintenance backlog on public lands that measures in the billions of dollars.  I believe the government has a responsibility to maintain and care for our existing lands before spending money we don’t have to acquire more and more and more land.”

Forest Service Planning Rule: The draft plan was published in the Federal Register on Feb 14, 2011 and is open to public comment for 90 days (access the draft rule in the Federal Register online). Comments must be submitted by close of business on May 16, 2011.

The Coalition for Recreation in the National Forests was formed late last summer because it appeared Recreation was not considered a pillar in the early drafts of the Rule.  Important provisions have been designed to make recreation a major consideration in the next round of forest planning.

Meetings across the country have been scheduled – and it’s very important that recreation enthusiasts attend.  For a list of the meetings, click here.
