March 18, 2017 Trail Report:

There is still a fair amount of snow at the top of the mountain with good riding. We again groomed the roads; but the Kirvin Park Trail continues to degrade rapidly with lots of bare spots. Rocks are starting to appear on Whitney Place Road. this was probably our last grooming run of the year unless we get more snow. Hope you got the chance to enjoy the short season.

March 17, 2017 Rider Report:

We just rode the roads and a number of trails on the top sections of OMSF (35+ miles) this morning; while everything was still frozen. The roads are a bit chopped up; but still a good ride. the trails we attempted had not been ridden by more than a couple of sleds and were fine. There may be some trees down on some of the back trails. The ride up from Kirvin is getting wet in the usual spots and rocks are surfacing in the rock field above Fanums Dam. We encountered about a dozen sleds. With this heat, conditions will rapidly deteriorate.

Rode from Becket Road to Finnerty…around lake to Schoolhouse…to County Road…to Four Corners…to Ashley Pond Trail to Aqueduct…and back.

Cold and windy but awesome day…trails are loaded with snow but no base…boney below…

No grooming yet on side trails but County Road was awesome. We were the only ones on the trails other than County Road…most remaining trails are without any tracks at all.

Cut a couple big cross-trail blow downs out of the way…lots of small sticks and branches buried in the snow…but very rideable.

Water is running at the smaller stream crossings and all lakes are UNSAFE…weak or no ice in most spots…

Awesome for this late in the season.  Get out and ride!!Cool

March 15, 2017 Trail Report:

Snow and lots of Snow.  We groomed many of the roads on top of OMSF including the trail up the mountain from Kirvin Park. No downed trees or rocks on the roads. We were not able to get to the back trails. Only a couple of sleds went by all day. Hopefully the trails will have a chance to set up and freeze tonight.

February 15, 2017 Rider Report:

We just rode the freshly groomed trails around the roads on top of OMSF. It was snowing like mad up there. The roads were awesome – flat and empty of any sleds. The trail from Kirvin Park was in good shape; but melting is occurring in the lower elevations.

One big tree is down completely blocking Ashley Lake Road. Aqueduct Trail has about 9 trees down of varying sizes; but is passable on a snowmobile without much trouble. However there are some open water sections and you will have to turn around when you reach the tree on Ashley Lake Road unless you happen to have a chainsaw. Washington Mountain Brook Trail is awaiting the removal of at least one tree.

We Groomed all of the roads on top of OMSF. There is lots of deep snow up there. KTSR groomed Finerty Pond Road and Schoolhouse Road. The trail from Kirvin Park is now in good shape with no exposed rocks. We still have a number of trees down on the Aqueduct Trail, Ashley Lake Road Trail and Washington Mountain Brook Trail. There were snowmobile tracks in and out of Navin Road and Spruce Trail; but their condition is unknown at present.

DCR has been notified about the lower Schemerhorn Road gate. there is supposed to be an opening for sleds near the gate.

February 7, 2017 Trail Report:

We Groomed all of the roads (double width) on top of OMSF. Ran into one jeep and one pickup driving up Whitney Place road. We erased many of the deep tire ruts; but more snow would be good. The trail from Kirvin Park is nothing but ice and dirt.

February 4, 2017 Trail Report:

We rode the upper portion of OMSF entering from West Branch Road. There is certainly ride-able snow on all of the upper level roads and some of the trails. West Branch Road and parts of County Road had 6+ inch deep frozen 4X4 ruts in the center, but we worked around them as we rode. We encountered big trees down on Ashley Lake Road near New Lenox Road, Schemerhorn Road near Camp Eagle, School House Road, Washington Mountain Brook Trail and County Road extension. Unfortunately, there are hunters, hikers, and dog walkers who are still driving 4X4s into 4 corners (I counted 6 of them along the way). We clocked one pickup truck doing 20 mph driving in to hunt or hike. Beach road is in great shape; but remember to slow down to get around the gate. We met up with one lone rider from Otis who reported that he had to “cut his way” up the Finerty Pond Trail to reach County Road. That was the only sled we saw all afternoon. That being said, it was not bad 30 miles ride. The trails had numerous rough spots, occasional open water; but very few rocks. We did not attempt to ride down to Kirvin Park; but you can probably make it if there are no big trees in the way.

December 31, 2016 Trail Report:

We decided to do a shakedown ride on the roads on top of OMSF this afternoon. Not bad for a first ride of 20 miles. The trails had numerous rough spots, some open water, some big time hidden ice patches and some exposed rocks. There were also a few 4×4 trucks (probably the last of the hunters). We encountered more ice and rocks they we like heading to Kirvin Park so we turned around and stayed on the top of the mountain. The groomer will not get past the ice on the way up the mountain without more snow.

I would rather unload at Kirvin but that has been taken over by dog walkers. Last time we parked there 2 years ago, a dog trainer and his class where nice enough to block us in..

Have a Nice day!

Not sure which lot you are referring to. The Town of Washington has been plowing the lot on the corner of Washington Mountain Road and West Branch Road and I expect that they will continue to do so this winter. There are some other small spots along Washington Mountain Road; but they are not for snowmobile trailer parking.

Yes, West Branch Rd. Not plowed nearly as wide as in the past..

You can lodge your complaint here….

December 13, 2016 Update:

1)  The middle section of Beach Road is now private property and has been gated off. Thanks to the landowner; however, we have a key so we can groom Beach Road. There is room next to the gate for snowmobiles to pass. Please remember to stay on the trail. Also remember that SSTS 95 officially and legally ends when you reach the paved portion of lower Beach Road which is plowed and maintained as an open town road.

2)  The DCR Timber Harvesting operation between Becket Road and Route 20 is about to begin and the preparation work will bisect the PJ Loop Trail in several places. There will also be some trail restoration work performed by DCR on the PJ Loop Trail during this time period. The Trail will remain open; but you should expect to encounter heavy equipment and debris as you slowly ride this portion of the trail. The final result should be a much improved PJ Loop trail when the timber harvest is complete.

December 11, 2016 Update:

1)  Excavator work has been performed on the lower portion of the Navin Road Trail. It still has some rocks; but the Navin Road Trail/Washington Mountain Brook Trail Loop will be open this year with sufficient snow. Just a friendly reminder to ride down Navin in case you encounter the groomer. This trail is narrow and the groomer does not back up steep trails therefore you will have to turn around since the groomer takes up the entire trail on the lower end.

2)  Bucksteep Manor will be closed this winter and as a result the Vagabon Trail will not be groomed this year.

3)  Schoolhouse Trail is in good shape except for the last 0.1 mile before coming to the Finerty Pond Trail. There you will encounter rocks and narrow passageways; but I suspect that with enough snow it will get groomed with a snowmobile based groomer. Next year we will finish the last short section to allow the Tucker Sno-Cat through to the Finerty Pond Trail.

4)  The groomer was delivered to its staging area today by our specially trained groomer mover team. It is gassed up and awaiting snow.

Be careful, ride safe and have fun!
