Greenfield Recorder staff reporter Kathleen McKiernan describes her first experience on a snowmobile.

Tim Pydych, co-owner of Ray’s Cycle Center, 332 Wells St. in Greenfield, introduced the newspaper reporter to the snowmobile controls with solid advice and encouragement.

Snowmobiler’s Dream: Easier than expected

Said McKiernan, “Riding a snowmobile was easier than I expected, once I became comfortable maneuvering the machine.”

Pydych, a Bernardston-Gill-Leyden Snowmobile Club member, gave the reporter a few tips and soon she was cruising along Pratt Field in Bernardston.

“After a few more circles around the field, feeling brave, I ventured off in a different direction on my own.”

“Squinting my eyes against the snow and wind hitting my face, I pulled my helmet shield down and revved the machine faster.”

As the writer crossed snowmobiling off her bucket list, she recognized SAM volunteers and the clubs that maintain the snowmobile trails in Massachusetts.
